Population about 30K, just a smidgen above the border of Pennsylvania, hometown to many notables and historically fascinating. When I first spotted these amazing postcards, I thought this was about as interesting as the town would get…my own romantic interest in seeing the writing and relationship offered through the cards. Yet again, I am surprised and spent some time learning about this area. Once a strong hold of the Iroquois, a civil war prisoner of war camp and an important line for railroads, Elmira is steeped in American history.
A few of the people from Elmira; Ernie Davis, first African-American football player to win the Heisman trophy. Tommy Hilfiger, clothing designer. Brain Williams, News Anchor. Olivia Langdon Clemens, wife of writer Mark Twain. Hal Roach, Filmmaker – Our Gang, Laurel & Hardy.
The postcards written 1907, 1908 and 1909 are from “Lovingly, Lillie” to her “Dear Myrtie” – carefully written in a beautiful script — One concerns an entire message about Jello and a new recipe….Finding even these few from the same writer with various views of her town gives a delightful picture of the time and the friendship between these women.
Beautiful examples of the chrome printing of this period, they depict a new and affluent age of American culture; Large homes, modern transportation and creatively built public spaces.
